About Sam
A pretty cool name for one of the world’s elite downhill mountain bike racers, huh? Dropped of by The Stork in Australia on July 21, 1985, Hill is a member of the mighty Monster Energy Iron Horse race outfit. After cranking the pedals into some notoriety in his native Australia, the 19 year old was tapped by Iron Horse bikes to race in anger for the Madcatz Iron Horse team in the 2003 Junior World Cup point series. Hill, feeling gravity’s pull, continued to excel and within two years was heading towards the top of the point tables in the globetrotting UCI (Union Cycliste Internationale) World Downhill Championship. It all came good for Hill in 2006 when he won the UCI World Downhill Championship.
He backed it up with another World Downhill Championship in 2007. Slamming home his dominance in the super-aggressive, go for broke downhill disciplines of mountain bike racing, in ’07 the Monster Energy-motivated Australian also snagged the UCI Men’s Elite Downhill World Cup. While winning World Cup events in 2008, Hill was forced to relinquish the World Cup to Greg Minnaar. Hill also placed third to United Kingdom-based riders Gee Atherton and runner-up Steve Peat in the 2008 UCI Mountain Bike World Championships in Val di Sole, Italy. No sweat, though, as Hill will be back in 2009 riding pell-mell down mountains and hair raising steep hills in an effort to win is rightful titles back.
